In a dramatic political turn following the tragic stampede at an RCB (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) fan event earlier this week, BJP leader and Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya has formally written to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, demanding that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The incident, which occurred during a promotional event organized by the IPL franchise RCB at a stadium in Bengaluru, led to chaos, resulting in the death of three fans and injuries to dozens. The event, meant to celebrate the team’s recent successes and engage with supporters, spiraled into a catastrophe due to alleged mismanagement, lack of crowd control, and the absence of emergency response protocols.
In his letter, Surya accused the state government of attempting to shield those responsible by ordering an internal inquiry instead of involving an impartial agency. “Given the gravity of the situation and the public sentiment surrounding this tragedy, it is imperative that the probe be conducted by an independent body like the CBI to ensure justice for the victims and their families,” the BJP leader wrote.

He further alleged that the event was allowed despite warnings from local authorities about overcrowding and inadequate arrangements, adding that “there seems to be a nexus between certain private event organizers and powerful individuals in the government.”
Opposition leaders, including former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, echoed the demand for a central investigation, stating that the truth will only come out if the CBI steps in.
Meanwhile, the state government has so far resisted calls for a central probe. CM Siddaramaiah, in a statement to the press, assured that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed and strict action will be taken against those found guilty. “We will leave no stone unturned in our investigation. The guilty will be punished, regardless of their influence,” he said.
With public outrage mounting and political pressure intensifying, the demand for a CBI inquiry is likely to dominate Karnataka’s political discourse in the coming days. For now, the grieving families and injured fans await answers — and justice.
